Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as “Mama G,” has explained why she became so closely associated with playing witches, wicked mothers-in-law and other villainous characters in Nigerian movies.

For many Nollywood fans, the sight of Patience Ozokwor in a movie immediately creates the expectation that trouble is coming. Over the years, she has built one of the most recognisable villainous personas in Nigerian cinema, particularly through her memorable portrayals of strict mothers, wicked stepmothers and troublesome mothers-in-law.

However, according to the actress, her movie roles should not be confused with her real personality.

Mama G Says Her Roles Are Meant to Expose Society

Speaking about her famous roles, Ozokwor explained that she sees herself as a “mirror to society.” She said her villainous characters allow her to bring attention to negative behaviours and social problems that people sometimes ignore.

In a 2026 interview, she defended her decision to continue accepting such characters, saying she takes pride in exposing things that happen in society through her performances. 

The actress has also explained in previous interviews that she does not see herself as a wicked person in real life. Instead, she believes that playing such characters effectively allows audiences to recognise and understand the consequences of wickedness.

Why Producers Keep Giving Her Wicked Roles

There is another simple reason: she became extremely good at them.

Ozokwor has previously explained that producers continued offering her villainous roles because audiences loved watching her in those characters. She said that even when she played good characters, some fans would complain because they had become accustomed to seeing her as the “bad woman.”

That is perhaps one of the biggest ironies of her career.
