ÌKÚNLÈ is the kind of Nollywood movie that leaves you thinking about the story even after the credits roll. Rather than focusing only on romance or drama for entertainment, Jide Awobona uses the movie to explore the realities of pregnancy, motherhood, marriage, sacrifice and the things women often go through without anyone seeing them.
What I particularly liked about the movie is its emotional and relatable message. Pregnancy is sometimes portrayed as a beautiful experience without showing the physical, emotional and mental challenges that can come with it. ÌKÚNLÈ attempts to look beyond the surface and remind viewers that every woman’s experience is different.
The performances also help make the story feel personal. The characters are faced with situations that require patience, understanding and emotional strength, giving the movie more depth than a typical relationship drama.
That said, I feel some parts could have been tighter. The emotional message is strong, but there are moments where the story takes a little longer than necessary to make its point. A slightly faster pace would have made the movie even more engaging.
